December 3, 2015: JEM Raw Chocolate Recalls Nut Butter Spread Products Due To Salmonella Risk

Nut Butter Recall – JEM Raw Chocolate, LLC, (JEM Raw) has issued a recall for all of its nut butter spreads because the products may be contaminated with the foodborne pathgen Salmonella. Salmonella is a bacterium capable of causing a serious and sometimes fatal infection known as salmonellosis.

JEM Nut Butter Spread Linked to Multi-state Salmonella Outbreak

The Jem Raw brand nut butter spread recall was issued after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and multiple state health agencies linked 11 cases of Salmonella food poisoning to the company’s products. In its outbreak announcement of December 3, 2015, the CDC reported that information obtained through patient interviews, at this time indicates that JEM Raw brand sprouted nut butter spreads are the likely source of this outbreak. The agency reported “All eight ill people interviewed (100%) reported exposure to a nut butter or nut butter spread in the week before illness onset, and six (75%) of these people specifically reported exposure to a JEM Raw brand sprouted nut butter spread.”

According to the CDC, a total of 11 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) have been reported from nine states as of December 2, 2015. The number of ill people identified in each state is as follows: California (1), Colorado (1), Georgia (1), Hawaii (1), Idaho (1), Illinois (1), North Carolina (1), New Jersey (1), and Oregon (3).

Available illness onset dates range from July 18, 2015 to October 15, 2015.

The JEM Raw recalled products were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail order. Products were distributed between June 2015 and November 2015. The CDC cautions that consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, serve, or sell the recalled nut butters. The recalled products should be thrown away, even if some of the nut butter spread has been eaten without anyone getting sick.

Salmonella Symptoms and Diagnosis

Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning (salmonellosis) may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 6 to 72 hours after eating a Salmonella contaminated food.
