Bagged Salad Cyclospora Outbreak Update – Federal and State investigators have collected epidemiologic and trackback information that indicates the likely cause of the Cyclospora bagged salad outbreak stems from products made at the Fresh Express production facility in Streamwood, IL. Fresh Express had issued a recall of its Iceberg Salad on June 25, 2020 and later expanded it to several lines of their products on June 27. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) last update was on June 26.
Bagged Salad Cyclospora Outbreak Information
On June 29, 2020, FDA announced the beginning of an inspection at the Fresh Express production facility in Streamwood, IL. They have initiated a traceback investigation to isolate the cause and source of the Cyclospora outbreak. Fresh Express and FDA officials are working together to identify other retailers Fresh Express supplied with products containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and/or carrots.
Multiple companies have already issued recalls over the past week and a half for bagged salad products containing the above ingredients from Fresh Express. The recalled products include those sold at Hy-Vee, ALDI, Jewel-Osco, and Walmart (via announcement from Fresh Express).
On June 26, 2020, FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials discussed concerns with Fresh Express that additional products made in the Streamwood facility could also be affected by Cyclospora. Fresh Express agreed to recall the products of concern. On June 27, 2020, Fresh Express recalled products containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and/or carrots and displaying the product code Z178, or a lower number. The recalled products were made in the Fresh Express production facility in Streamwood, IL and have the potential to be contaminated with Cyclospora.
FDA officials are continuing their investigation into the ongoing Cyclospora outbreak and will update the public on an ongoing basis.

The FDA has released the following numbers regarding affected people and states:
- Total Illnesses: 206
- Hospitalizations: 23
- Deaths: 0
- Illness Onset Date Range: 5/11/2020 – 6/17/2020
- States with Cases: IA (74), IL (57), KS (1), MN (25), MO (10), NE (20), ND (6), WI (13)
Cyclospora Information
Per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Cyclospora infects the small intestine (bowel) and usually causes watery diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements. Other common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms may be noted.
