FDA’s Bagged Salad Cyclospora Outbreak News – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) traceback investigation is ongoing to identify the cause and source of the outbreak. Salad ingredients such as iceberg lettuce, carrots, and red cabbage are items of interest in the investigation. The inspection is continuing at the Fresh Express production facility in Streamwood, IL.

Bagged Salad Cyclospora Outbreak Update and Information
On July 9, 2020, FDA announced an update to their ongoing investigation into the Cyclospora outbreak.
The Public Health Agency of Canada has issued a public health notice regarding an ongoing outbreak related to Fresh Express and Cyclospora infections in Canada. The Public Health Agency of Canada, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, FDA, and CDC are collaborating on these ongoing Cyclospora investigations.
As of July 8, 2020, CDC is reporting a total of 509 cases across 8 states.
FDA continues to work with retailers to ensure the potentially contaminated products are effectively removed from the marketplace. The FDA will continue its periodic updates as the investigation continues.
CYCLOSPORA INFORMATION
Per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Cyclospora infects the small intestine (bowel) and usually causes watery diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements. Other common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms may be noted.
