FDA Cyclospora Bagged Salad Update News – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) traceback investigation has identified multiple farms within the U.S. that may have supplied product used in the Fresh Express bagged salad products.
To date, Fresh Express and Hy-Vee, among others, have issued recalls for their bagged salad products due to Cyclospora contamination.
The FDA’s last update was on July 23, 2020.
FDA Cyclospora Bagged Salad Update Information
On August 14, 2020, the FDA issued an update stating that several U.S. farms have been identified as part of the Cyclospora outbreak. CDC officials have reported a total of 690 cases across 13 states as of August 14.
Further, FDA officials analyzed water samples from two public access points along a regional water management canal (C-23) just west of Port St. Lucie, FL. The samples taken from these bodies of water tested positive for Cyclospora cayetanensis. Unfortunately, the FDA has been unable to determine if the Cyclospora strain detected in the canal is a genetic match to the clinical cases, due to the nature of genetic typing methodologies. Accordingly, there is currently not enough evidence to support a conclusive determination that this strain is linked to the ongoing outbreak. The FDA advises that regardless of the lack of conclusive evidence of a link, this investigation offers them important information and clues to help inform future preventive measures for the public.
The FDA is continuing to work with Florida officials and the local water district to try to determine the source and potential impact of Cyclospora in the canal.
Per the FDA’s latest update:
“FDA’s traceback investigation is complete, however the cause or source of the outbreak has not yet been determined via traceback. Based on the traceback, carrots are no longer being investigated for this outbreak. Two of the salad ingredients, red cabbage and iceberg lettuce, continue to be items of interest in the investigation. As this outbreak investigation continues, the FDA will provide additional updates to this advisory.”
Cyclospora Information
Per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Cyclospora infects the small intestine (bowel) and usually causes watery diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements. Other common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms may be noted.
