Opera House Hotel Linked To Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak
On August 20, 2015, the New York City Department of Health announced that it had identified the source of the Legionnaires’ Disease outbreak in the South Bronx that began in July. The following outbreak information was provided to the public:
- The source of the Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak in South Bronx is the Opera House Hotel.
- Legionella bacteria isolated from the Opera House Hotel cooling tower matched the Legionella bacterial strains isolated from patients sickened in the outbreak.
- The NYC Department of Health states that the outbreak over.
- There are no new illnesses related to outbreak since August 3, 2015, longer than the 2-week incubation period for Legionnaires’ Disease.
- The Opera House Hotel’s cooling tower was disinfected, and all cooling towers in the affected area have been disinfected
Public Health Officials Work Together To Identify The Outbreak Source
Collaborative efforts between the New York City Health Department’s Public Health Laboratory, New York State’s Wadsworth Center Laboratory, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have identified the Opera House Hotel as the source of the Legionnaires’ Disease outbreak in the South Bronx that has sickened 128 individuals, and resulted in 12 deaths. Public health officials believe that the outbreak is over. The first illness was reported on about July 10, 2015.
By sampling local cooling towers and testing isolated Legionella bacteria, public health laboratories were able to match the Legionella strain found in the Opera House Hotel cooling tower to the outbreak strain isolated from patients. Further epidemiologic and environmental investigations by the Health Department support the conclusion that the Opera House Hotel cooling tower was the source of the deadly Legionella outbreak. The Health Department reports that it will continue to investigate practices that led to the outbreak, for example inadequate cooling tower maintenance or inadequate levels of biocide.
