CDC Reports Salmonella Paratyphi Outbreak Linked To Raw Tuna Sushi

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that as of July 20, 2015, a total of 62 persons have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) across eleven states. The number of confirmed illnesses by state is as follows: Arizona (11), California (34), Illinois (1), Michigan (1), Minnesota (4), Mississippi (1), New Mexico (6), South Dakota (1), Virginia (1), Washington (1), and Wisconsin (1).
Illness onset dates range from March 5, 2015 to July 7, 2015. Available information for 59 outbreak victims indicates that eleven required hospitalization due to their illness.

About Salmonella Paratyphi

Salmonella is a type of bacterium, capable of causing foodborne illness that can range from mild to life threatening. According to the CDC, the illness caused by this strain of Salmonella typically includes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the pathogen. Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) does not cause paratyphoid fever, enteric fever, or typhoid fever.

Osamu Corporation Recalls Frozen Tuna

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that on July 21, 2015, Osamu Corporation of Gardena, California, issued a recall for its frozen yellowfin tuna that came from one processing plant in Indonesia as follows:

  • All frozen tuna (loin, saku, chunk, slice, and ground market forms) sold to restaurants and grocery stores throughout the U.S. from May 9, 2014 to July 9, 2015.
    • Affected products can be identified by four-digit purchase order numbers (PO#) 8563 through 8599 located on each product carton box..
  • One lot of frozen yellowfin tuna chunk meat sold to AFC Corporation of Rancho Dominquez, CA, for use in sushi franchises in grocery stores throughout the U.S. from May 20, 2015 to May 26, 2015. (Two reports of food poisoning in Minnesota have been associated with AFC sushi.)
    • Lot number 68568 (Lot#68568)

In its recall advice to restaurants and retailers , the CDC cautioned “If restaurants and retailers do not know the lot number of frozen tuna in their freezer, contact the distributor. When in doubt, don’t sell or serve it.”

Safety Recommendations For Consumers

As a preventative measure, the CDC makes the following recommendations:

  • People at higher risk for serious foodborne illness should not eat any raw fish or raw shellfish, regardless of an ongoing outbreak. These groups include:
    • Children younger than 5 years
    • Adults older than 65 years
    • Pregnant women
    • People with weakened immune systems
  • Contact your health care provider if you think you may have become ill from eating raw tuna sushi.
    • Most people infected with Salmonella develop the following signs and symptoms 12-72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria:
      • Diarrhea
      • Fever
      • Abdominal cramps
