Deli Meats Listeria Outbreak News – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has declared that the Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) outbreak linked to deli meats is now over.
Deli Meats Listeria Outbreak Information
On January 28, 2021, the CDC announced the conclusion of the Listeria outbreak linked to deli meats. Overall, 12 infections were reported from the following states: Florida (1), Louisiana (1), Massachusetts (7), and New York (3). There was 1 death reported in Florida. The samples collected were from August 6, 2020 through October 30, 2020, with an age range of 40 to 89 years old (83% female).
Epidemiologic evidence found that deli meat was the likely source of this Listeria outbreak. In interviews with 11 of the sickened individuals, all reported having ingested Italian-style meats, such as: salami, mortadella, and prosciutto. The deli meats were reportedly purchased prepackaged and sliced at deli counters, at various locations. A specific type or brand of deli meat or common supplier was not identified.
The CDC and U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS), along with public health and regulatory officials in several states, investigated this multi-state outbreak of Listeria infections. DNA fingerprinting was performed on Listeria bacteria collected from ill persons through whole genome sequencing (WGS). The WGS results showed that the isolated bacteria collections were closely related genetically, meaning that the infected individuals share a common source of infection.
Per the CDC, even when there are no ongoing outbreaks:
“Avoid eating deli meats, unless heated to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot just before serving.”
