The USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) reported that on May 15, 2014, Wolverine Packing Company of Detroit, Michigan recalled approximately 1.8 million pounds of ground beef products that may be linked to a multistate E. coli O157:H7 food poisoning outbreak.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also reported that as of June 20, 2014, a total of 20 persons were infected with the outbreak strains of E. coli O157:H7 across 4 states. The number of E. coli food poisoning outbreak victims was reported as follows: Massachusetts (1), Michigan (5), Missouri (1), and Ohio (5). Illness onset date ranged from April 22, 2014 to May 2, 2014.
Product Recall Information
According to FSIS, the recalled ground beef products were produced between March 31, 2014 and April 18, 2014, and bear the establishment number “EST. 2574B” with a production date code in the format “Packing Nos: MM DD 14” between “03 31 14” and “04 18 14”. The recalled ground beef was shipped to distributors for restaurant use in Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio. The recall announcement also stated that the recalled ground beef was not distributed to the Department of Defense, the National School Lunch Program, or catalog/internet sales.

E.coli Symptoms
Symptoms of E. coli infection may include severe abdominal cramps, fever, vomiting, watery or bloody diarrhea, and dehydration. Some individuals may develop a type of kidney failure known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The very young, elderly, and immunocompromised are at greatest risk for experiencing complications due to E. coli infection.
