Thirty-three persons across five states were infected with Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 in a food poisoning outbreak linked to pre-packaged leafy greens produced by State Garden of Chelsea, Massachusetts. The packaged greens were sold in Wegmans Food Markets. Illness onset dates ranged from October 18, 2012 to November 12, 2012.
The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that approximately 46 % of the outbreaks victims required hospitalization, and two of those sickened developed a type of kidney failure known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
Spinach Recall
On November 2, 2012, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. recalled approximately 31,000 lbs. of Wegmans Organic Spinach and Spring Mix sold in 5 oz. (UPC 77890 16437) and 11 oz. (UPC 77890 16411) clam shell packages. The product was supplied to Wegmans by State Garden, Inc. of Chelsea, Massachusetts.
E. coli Food Poisoning Symptoms
Symptoms of E. coli infection may include severe abdominal cramps, fever, and watery diarrhea. The diarrhea may become bloody and can lead to dehydration. Severe infections can cause kidney failure. The very young, elderly, and immunocompromised are at greatest risk for experiencing complications due to E. coli infection.
