Enoki Mushrooms Recall Update News – The U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is continuing its investigation into enoki mushrooms contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria).
Enoki Mushrooms Recall Update Information
On March 27, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that they are working with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and state and local partners to investigate a multistate outbreak of Listeria infections linked to enoki mushrooms.
The FDA has recommended that consumers not eat and should check their refrigerators and throw away any recalled enoki mushrooms from Sun Hong Foods, Inc. and Guan’s Mushroom Co. because they may be contaminated with Listeria. Consumers, restaurants, retailers, and high risk groups should discard and not eat, sell, or serve enoki mushrooms if they cannot tell where they came from. High risk groups include the elderly, people with weakened immune systems or chronic diseases, and pregnant women and their newborn babies.
Recalled enoki mushrooms from Sun Hong Foods, Inc. have a UPC code of: 7 426852 625810. Laboratory analysis of a sample of these Sun Hong Foods Inc.’s enoki mushrooms found the presence of Listeria, and whole genome sequencing analysis of the sample found that the Listeria found in these mushrooms matched the outbreak strain.
Guan’s Mushroom Co. recalled products have a UPC code of: 859267007013 and package code 14-1, while being distributed to retailers and wholesalers in white cardboard boxes with Guan’s logo in green color and code #02473. Boxes #02473 could have been distributed further by the retailers and wholesalers. Whole genome sequencing analysis is currently being conducted to determine if Guan’s Mushroom Co.’s enoki mushrooms are linked to the outbreak.
The FDA has advised it will release more information as it becomes available.
