FDA Update on Salmonella Shrimp Outbreak – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final update on the Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak linked to shrimp products.
On August 17, 2021, the FDA announced an update to this matter to advise of additional illnesses linked to shrimp products due to this Salmonella outbreak.
FDA Update Information for Salmonella Shrimp Outbreak
On September 21, 2021, the FDA issued a notice that the Salmonella Weltevreden multi-state outbreak investigation linked to frozen cooked shrimp distributed by Avanti Frozen Foods, among others, is over.
This outbreak consisted of 9 confirmed illnesses, 3 hospitalizations, in 4 state across the country: Arizona (2), Michigan (2), Nevada (4), Rhode Island (1), with the last illness onset date being July 17, 2021.
About Salmonella
Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness.
