August 17, 2021: FDA Issues Additional Update on Salmonella Weltevreden Shrimp Outbreak

FDA Update on Salmonella Shrimp Outbreak – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued another update on the Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak linked to shrimp products.

The FDA previously updated this matter to advise of additional illnesses linked to shrimp products due to this Salmonella outbreak.

FDA Update Information for Salmonella Shrimp Outbreak

On August 17, 2021, the FDA issued a notice that since July 21, 2021, at least one sick person consumed shrimp not part of the Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak. The FDA, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and state and local partners are continuing a multi-state outbreak investigation linked to frozen cooked shrimp distributed by Avanti Frozen Foods.

On August 13, 2021, Avanti Frozen Foods, on the FDA’s advice, issued an expanded recall for various shrimp products. In response, the following companies also issued recalls for shrimp products:

  • Genji Pacific LLC.
  • Mai Cuisine Inc.
  • Mai Franchising Inc.

To date, there have been 9 confirmed illnesses, 3 hospitalizations, in 4 state across the country: Arizona (2), Michigan (2), Nevada (4), Rhode Island (1), with the last illness onset date being July 17, 2021.

About Salmonella

Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness.
