On September 16, 2015, Karoun Dairies, Inc. announced that in the interest of public safety, the company is recalling of a variety of cheeses.
This recall was linked to a multi-state outbreak of Listeria food poisoning.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious or fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people. In pregnant women, infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Short-term symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

This outbreak is currently being investigated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in collaboration with the FDA and multiple state public health agencies. The following brands are subject to the recall: Karoun, Arz, Gopi, Queso Del Valle, Central Valley Creamery, Gopi, and Yanni. A complete list of recalled products and UPC codes can be found at Karoun Cheese Recall.
According to the CDC, “Consumers should not eat, restaurants should not serve, and retailers should not sell recalled cheeses. These products may be contaminated with Listeria and may make people sick.”
