Ikea Dresser Fall Injury
After three children died in the past two years after dresser tip-over accidents. Ikea and the CPSC have announced a recall 29 million chests and drawers, including the popular Malm model.
The Ikea dressers were meant to be fastened to a wall, but the product unfastened poses the risk of falling if a child opens drawers and attempts to climb on them.
Ikea Malm Dresser Tip-over Injuries
In 2014, two young children died in tip-over accidents involving Ikea’s Malm dressers.
In February 2016, a third child died after a Malm chest fell on top of him. As the Star Tribune reports, the boy’s family could not follow the product’s wall-fastening instructions because they were not allowed to put holes in the walls of their rented apartment.
There had also been dozens of accidents that did not result in deaths.
Details of Ikea Dresser Fall Injury Recall
The recall affects Malm dressers and chests of drawers with three or more drawers, as well as a number of other Ikea models.
Consumers can still ask for a free wall anchoring kit, but they can also opt for a refund for their furniture. Ikea is providing full refunds for dressers purchased after 2002, and partial store credit for older furniture.
