January 4, 2016: Big Dog Natural Recall Dog Food Due to Salmonella and Listeria Risk

Big Dog Natural Recall Dog Food News

Due to a potential contamination of Salmonella in Big Dog Natural’s “Fish Supreme” dog food, and a potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes in their “Chicken Supreme” dog food, Big Dog Natural of Brick, NJ recalled select lots of Big Dog Natural raw dehydrated dog food.

The recall was prompted by the United States Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) discovery of the presence of Salmonella in a sample of Chicken Supreme dog food and the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of Fish Supreme dog food. The affected, potentially contaminated lots were shipped to online customers between October 31, 2015 and November 12, 2015, which includes all weight volumes of the Big Dog Natural Chicken and Fish Supreme.

Big Dog Natural Recall Dog Food Due to Traces of Listeria, Salmonella Bacteria

The FDA Press Release regarding the Big Dog Natural recall provided the following important information:

“Pets with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.”
