Jimmy John’s E. Coli Outbreak Warning Letter News – The Division of Human and Animal Food Operations issued a warning letter to Jimmy John’s restaurants based upon investigations conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) .
Jimmy John’s E. Coli Outbreak Warning Letter Information
On February 21, 2020, the Division of Human and Animal Food Operations issued a warning letter to Jimmy John’s restaurants outlining investigations completed by the FDA and CDC in relation to recent outbreaks linked to the corporation. Five outbreaks of E. coli and Salmonella were under investigation and subsequently linked to clover sprouts and cucumbers used by Jimmy John’s restaurants.
These outbreaks occurred in the following states:
- Iowa (22 people from November to December 2019): infected with E. coli 0103
- Everyone infected had eaten at 1 or more of 15 Jimmy John’s
- Illinois (2), Minnesota (2), and Wisconsin (6) (As of February 28, 2018): infected with Salmonella Montevideo
- 8 people had eaten at Jimmy John’s in Illinois and Wisconsin
- All 8 had eaten raw sprouts
- 1 person reported having eaten raw sprouts purchased from a Minnesota grocery store
- 8 people had eaten at Jimmy John’s in Illinois and Wisconsin
- Idaho, Montana, Michigan, Utah, California, and Washington (19 total people as of August 1, 2014): infected with E. coli 0102
- 13 people reported eating raw clover sprouts in the week before getting sick
- 11 of the cases reportedly involved clover sprouts from Jimmy John’s
- Colorado (8 people as of the end of October 2013): infected with E. coli O157:H7
- Everyone infected had eaten raw cucumbers at 1 of 5 Jimmy John’s in the Denver metro area
- A total of 29 people from eleven states: infected with E. coli 026
- 23 reported having eaten sprouts at 1 of 6 Jimmy John’s within a week of illness
All of the E. coli and Salmonella Montevideo isolates were closely related via whole genome sequencing, a state-of-the-art genetic subtyping method.
About E. Coli
Escherichia coli (E. coli) can cause serious illness in humans, including diarrhea, often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. This condition can lead to serious kidney damage and death.
