Kidney Disease Heart Burn Medication
Medications such as Nexium, Prevacid, and Prilosec have been linked to kidney health issues, such as chronic kidney disease. These medications, also known as Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) medications, are used to control stomach acid and manage symptoms of heart burn, acid reflux, and indigestion.
Potential Danger of Kidney Failure
This increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease in those taking PPIs has been supported by several studies. Most recently, a study published in February 2016 in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that PPIs may increase the chance of suffering from chronic kidney disease as much as 50%.

Additional Risks
PPI medication use puts patients at risk for a variety of serious complications in addition to chronic kidney disease and heart attack, including:
- • Hypomagnesemia
- • Bone Fractures
- • Acquired Infections
- • Potential Birth Defects
PPIs may also increase the risk of various kidney events, including acute kidney injury and an inflammatory Kidney disease known as acute interstitial nephritis.
