March 21, 2013: Pro-Amino Recalls Chocolate Protein Bars May Be Contaminated with Salmonella

On March 18 2013, Pro-Amino International Inc., of Saint-Eustache, Quebec, Canada, issued a recall for their ProtiDiet High Protein Chocolate Dream Bars, because the products may be contaminated with the bacterial pathogen Salmonella.

Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food poisoning. Salmonella food poisoning symptoms may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Severe diarrhea and/or vomiting may lead to dehydration requiring treatment with intravenous fluids. In the most severe cases, the bacteria may spread from the intestines to the blood stream (septicemia) and other body sites, requiring immediate antibiotic therapy. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to suffer the severe effects of Salmonella infection.
