Paragard is an intrauterine device (IUD) used as a long-term birth control (contraception). It is a copper, non-hormonal IUD birth control device that has been around since the 1980’s.
The Paragard IUD is a T-shaped plastic frame that is inserted into the uterus. Copper wire is coiled around the device, producing an inflammatory reaction that is toxic to sperm and eggs, thus preventing pregnancy. Paragard is the only copper IUD available in the U.S. It is able to prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years after insertion.
