UEXPECTED FRACTURE RATE PROMPTS PROFEMUR NECK COMPONENT RECALL
On August 7, 2015, MicroPort Orthopedics Inc. issued a recall for the “modular neck component” the company’s replacement hip joint system.
The recalled component is described as the:
“PROFEMUR Neck Varus/Valgus CoCR, part number PHAC1254”.
The hip joint/modular neck component recall was issued after MicroPort Orthopedics Inc. received reports of an unexpected rate of fractures after surgery related to the PROFEMUR modular neck.
HIP JOINT INJURIES
According to the FDA’s Medical Device Safety Alert if the modular neck fractures, a patient may experience sudden pain, instability, and difficulty walking and performing common tasks.
The alert advised that an acute fracture requires a revision surgery to remove and replace the neck and stem components of the artificial hip joint. Additionally, an acute fracture and emergency revision surgery is a serious adverse health consequence and could lead to neurovascular damage, hematoma, hemorrhage, and even death.
