September 14, 2015: Recalled Appeeling Apples Distributed To Florida Schools

Recalled Appeeling Apples News

Following the recall of Appeeling Fruit Inc.’s packaged apple sliced last Wednesday, Appeeling has discovered that several hundred cases of recalled and possibly contaminated snacks had been distributed to Florida’s Palm Beach County School District. Appeeling Fruit Inc. noticed the oversight after a customer observed that the bags fell within the bounds of the best-if-used-by date 09/21/15 and production date 310815, which had been recalled.

On September 9, 2015, the recall was initiated when it was discovered that Appeeling Fruit Inc.’s apple slices may be contaminated with the food borne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. The possible contamination was detected when an environmental sample taken in the production facility tested positive for the bacteria.

Parents Warned As Possibly Contaminated Apples Remain Unaccounted-For

Once the error was detected most cases of the recalled Appeeling Apples were retrieved and destroyed, however, 40 cases still remain in distribution. In acknowledgment of this threat, Appeeling Fruit Inc. issued the following guidelines:

“Parents of children in Florida’s Palm Beach County School District:
the recalled 2 oz. bagged Snack Fresh product can be identified by three sets of numbers on the back of the Snack Fresh bag: 1) the Best-if-Used-by date is 09/21/15; 2) the UPC code under the black bars is 74641 00982; and 3) the production date, or first six numbers under the “Product of USA” stamp is 310815. All three sets of numbers on the 2 oz. Snack Fresh bag must match these in order to identify the recalled product.”

Listeria Information

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacterium capable of causing a serious and sometimes fatal infection. Newborns, pregnant women, older adults, and those individuals with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk for developing listeriosis and experiencing complications.
