July 31, 2020: Red Onions Salmonella Newport Outbreak Investigation

Red Onions Salmonella Newport Outbreak News – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are working with state and local partners on a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections stemming from red onions.  The Public Health Agency of Canada is also investigating a Salmonella Newport outbreak that is seemingly related to the U.S. outbreak.

Red Onions Salmonella Newport Outbreak Information

On July 31, 2020, the FDA announced that they are working with Canadian health officials to identify the source of the Salmonella Newport outbreak.  Canadian health officials believe U.S. red onions are the potential source of the outbreak.  Canadian officials issued a recall as to U.S. imported red onions.

U.S. health officials were able to use this information, as well as epidemiologic information on the U.S. outbreak from CDC officials, to initiate a traceback investigation.  The investigation found that Thomson International, Inc. was the likely source of the contaminated red onions in the U.S. The FDA will continue to provide updates as the investigation continues.

About Salmonella

Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness.

Questions or concerns about foodborne illness should also be directed to your health care provider.
