Dole Fresh Vegetables has recalled cases of Dole Spinach Salad after samples of the product tested positive for Salmonella. The Salmonella was detected by the Laboratory Division of the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development in standard random testing.

Information on Salmonella Food Poisoning

Salmonella is a bacterium capable of causing a serious and sometimes life-threatening infection known as salmonellosis. One of the most common foodborne illnesses, it can occur when food contaminated by Salmonella is consumed.

According to the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are an estimated 1.2 million cases in the U.S. each year, with approximately 400 of those cases resulting in death. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to suffer severe illness or Salmonella Complications.

Salmonella Symptoms

Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning (salmonellosis) may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 6 to 72 hours after eating a Salmonella contaminated food.

The affected products are coded A27409B & A27409A, with an Enjoy By date of October 15 and UPC 7143000976. These product codes and Enjoy By dates can be found in the upper right-hand corner of the package. The UPC code is below the barcode, on the back of the package. The affected salad products were sold in Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee,and Wisconsin.
