November 15, 2012: Salmonella Outbreak Prompts Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter and Sunland Products Recall

Salmonella Outbreak Update – The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, recently reported that as of November 8, 2012, a total of 41 persons have been infected with the foodborne pathogen Salmonella Bredeney as a result of eating contaminated peanut butter.

The outbreak was eventually linked to Trader Joe’s Valencia Creamy Peanut Butter, after New Jersey, Virginia, and Washington health officials isolated the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bredeney from opened jars of the product taken from the homes of outbreak victims. Further investigative efforts led public health officials to believe that Trader Joe’s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter made with Sea Salt, manufactured by Sunland, Inc. of Portales, New Mexico, is a likely source of the outbreak.

Reported illness onset dates range from June 14, 2012, to September 21, 2012. The CDC’s update reflected that 41 persons, infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bredeney, were reported per state as follows: Arizona (1), California (7), Connecticut (3), Illinois (1), Louisiana (1), Massachusetts (3), Maryland (1), Michigan (1), Minnesota (1), Missouri (2), Nevada (1), New Jersey (2), New Mexico (1), New York (2), North Carolina (2), Pennsylvania (2), Rhode Island (1), Texas (5), Virginia (2), and Washington (2).

This latest outbreak led to a long list of product recalls that consumers can reference by visiting the FDA website at www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/MajorProductRecalls/SunlandNutSeedProductRecalls/default.htm.
