October 8, 2021: FDA Announces Investigation into Salmonella Thompson Seafood Outbreak

FDA Salmonella Thompson Seafood Outbreak News – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced an investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Thompson related to seafood distributed by Northeast Seafood Products.

In conjunction with the FDA, Northeast Seafood Products has issued a recall for various seafood products.

FDA Salmonella Thompson Seafood Outbreak Information

On October 8, 2021, the FDA, along with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and state and local officials, are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Thompson infections linked to seafood distributed by Northeast Seafood Products of Denver, CO.

The majority of the sick individuals are from Colorado or had been to Colorado during the week they got sick. Two people had not traveled to Colorado during the week they became ill. There have been 19 hospitalizations and 102 reported illnesses related to this seafood Salmonella outbreak: AZ (1), CO (82), CT (1), IA (1), MN (2), MO (1), NE (2), NJ (2), PA (1), TX (2), VA (2), WA (2), WI (2), WY (2).

The CDC’s epidemiological information and subsequent analysis has indicated that seafood is the leading hypothesis for the cause of illnesses related to this outbreak. The FDA’s traceback investigation identified Northeast Seafood Products as the common denominator. Officials collected samples from Northeast Seafood Products on October 7, 2021. These samples came back positive for Salmonella Thompson and were further determined to match the outbreak strain.

Earlier on October 8, 2021, Northeast Seafood Products recalled Haddock, Monkfish, Bone-in Trout, Grouper, Red Snapper, Red Rock Cod, Ocean Perch, Pacific Cod, Halibut, Coho Salmon, Atlantic Salmon Portions, Lane Snapper, Tilapia, All Natural Salmon Fillet, Pacific Sole, and Farm Raised Striped Bass. The affected products were sold to restaurants, Safeway, Albertsons, and Sprouts supermarkets in Colorado. Though, the Pacific Cod sold through Sprouts is not part of the recall. Northeast Seafood Products has temporarily shut down production until a specific cause is determined.

FDA officials recommend that consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, serve, or sell any recalled seafood. Individuals who have purchased the affected products should throw them away.

July 28, 2021: E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Cake Mix

E. coli Cake Mix Outbreak News – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with local public health and regulatory officials across several states are collecting data to investigate a multi-state outbreak of E. coli 0121 infections linked to cake mix.

E. Coli Cake Mix Outbreak Information

As of July 27, 2021, 16 people across 12 states have been infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli 0121. To date, illness onset dates have been between February 26, 2021 to June 21, 2021. As of this posting, the following state have been affected: Illinois (2), Indiana (1), Iowa (2), Massachusetts (1), Michigan (1), Nebraska (2), Ohio (2), Oregon (1), South Carolina (1), Utah (1), Virginia (1), and Washington (1).

Sick individuals range in age from 2 to 73 years old, with a median age of 13. 100% of the infected are female. Of the information available on the 16 ill people, 7 have been hospitalized. One person developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). To date, no deaths have been reported related to this E. coli cake mix outbreak.

Health officials have been interviewing affected people about the foods they ate the week before they became ill. Of the 8 people interviewed, 6 (75%) reported tasting or eating raw batter made with a cake mix. Different brands and varieties of cake mix were reportedly bought. DNA fingerprinting has been performed on bacteria through a method called whole genome sequencing (WGS). WGS has shown that the bacteria collected from the sick individuals are closely related genetically, meaning the sick people likely became ill from the same food.

The FDA is continuing its traceback investigation using purchase records from the affected individuals to determine a common cake mix brand or production facility.

Information on and Diagnosis of E. Coli Infection

Per the CDCE. coli can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness, bloodstream infections, and other illnesses. The types of E. coli that can cause illness can be transmitted through contaminated water or food, or through contact with animals or people.

Always put your health first. If you suspect that you have contracted E. coli or are experiencing food poisoning symptoms, contact your doctor. He or she can order a stool culture to confirm E. coli infection.

June 25, 2021: FDA Outbreak Investigation of Salmonella Weltevreden Linked to Shrimp

FDA Salmonella Shrimp Outbreak Investigation News – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is actively investigating a Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak linked to shrimp.

On June 25, 2021, Avanti Frozen Foods recalled various frozen cooked shrimp products due to this Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak.

FDA Salmonella Shrimp Outbreak Investigation Information

On January 26, 2021, FDA officials collected an import sample of Avanti Frozen Foods shrimp as a routine part of the FDA’s Imported Seafood Compliance Program. The sample was analyzed and showed the presence of Salmonella Weltevreden. In March 2021, this shipment was refused admission into the U.S. and was subsequently destroyed, in response to the positive test. In April 2021, three clinical isolates collected from ill people were reported to be closely linked to the isolate collected from the Avanti import sample.

As of June 25, 2021, there are six clinical isolates from ill people that are genetically matched to the Salmonella sample collected from the import sample. Five of the six ill people were interviewed to determine the food they ingested prior to their illness onset. All five reported eating shrimp. Based on purchase dates and locations for four of the sick people, the FDA’s traceback investigation identified a common shipment of shrimp that may have been consumed by the individuals. To date, the six affected people are from Nevada (4) and Arizona (2), with two having been hospitalized.

Restaurants, retailers, and consumers should not serve, sell or eat recalled shrimp products from Avanti Frozen Foods.
