Massachusetts state health officials have warned consumers not to drink milk products from Whittier Farms after it was learned that two elderly men, both of Worcester County, died after consuming Whittier Farms products contaminated with Listeria.
Four cases of Listeria food poisoning, also referred to as listeriosis, were identified during the past six months. The food poisoning victims included three elderly men and a pregnant woman.
Doctor Al DeMaria, the state director of communicable disease control, indicated that bacterial DNA showed that the bacteria linked to the listeriosis outbreak came from a common source – Listeria contaminated milk.
Whittier Farms brand name products include Whittier, Schultz, Balance Rock, Spring Brook and Maple.
Listeriosis is a serious illness caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms of the illness include fever, muscle aches, and, occasionally, nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur. The disease affects primarily pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and adults with weakened immune systems.
