January 5, 2008: Botulism Linked To Potter County Restaurant’s Home-Canned Soup

The Pennsylvania Health Department warned consumers that they should not consume, nor open canned products of any kind from the Schumacher’s Inn in Austin, Potter County, due to the risk of botulism poisoning.

To date, one woman who consumed canned chicken soup from the restaurant has been hospitalized.

Anyone in possession of canned products from the restaurant should immediately contact the Pennsylvania Department of Health, toll-free, at 877-PA-HEALTH.

Botulism is caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botulism is a serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin, which blocks nerve function, leading to respiratory and musculoskeletal paralysis.

An individual with botulism may experience double vision, blurred vision, dry mouth, inability to swallow, difficulty speaking or slurred speech, muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, and an inability to breath. Botulism can be fatal, and medical attention should be sought immediately.

Botulism symptoms usually appear 12 to 36 hours after consuming Clostridium botulinum toxin; however, symptoms can occur as early as 6 hours or as late as 10 days following the consumption of contaminated food.
