January 6, 2009: E. coli Outbreak May Be Linked To Denver Stock Show

cows Colorado public health officials are investigating an E. coli outbreak that has sickened 20 people.  The outbreak, caused by E. coli O157:H7, may be linked to last month’s National Western Stock Show held in Denver.

According to public health officials, 19 of the 20 E. coli infections occurred in children, and 16 of the children attended the stock show.  The one adult E. coli infection occurred in a 66 year old.

The investigation is still ongoing. "We are trying to figure out the source — whether food, water or animals," stated Dr Chris Urbina, director of Denver Public Health.  The outbreak includes residents of Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, and Jefferson counties.

The Colorado health department provides the following E. coli outbreak advice:

Child-care centers should report any cases of bloody diarrhea (even if there is only one) to a local public health agency or to the state at 303-692-2700.

If there is a suspected connection to the stock show, the child or staffer should be referred to a health care provider for testing before returning to class.

Symptoms of E.coli infection may include severe abdominal cramps, fever, and watery diarrhea. The diarrhea may become bloody and can lead to dehydration.  The very young, elderly, and immunocompromised are at greatest risk for experiencing complications due to E. coli infection.
