Subsequent to Internet publication by the New England Journal of Medicine of a study of the diabetes drug Avandia, the FDA issued an alert to prescribers about the possible significant increased risk of heart attack and heart-related deaths with use of the drug. Avandia is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. This oral diabetes drug is used by approximately one million individuals in the U.S.
The FDA has not confirmed the findings published by the “New England Journal” concerning rosiglitazone maleate, which is marketed as Avandia, Avandamet and Avandaryl, and data review is ongoing.
The pooled analysis of controlled clinical drug trials, which was published on the journal’s website this week, showed that the risk of heart attack rose by 43% and cardiac-related deaths by 64% with the use of Avandia.
Over 200 million people around the world are afflicted with type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the illness.
