Undeclared ingredients are the cause of a voluntary recall made by GMP Herbal Products, Inc. Two ingredients, in particular, have been identified through chemical analyses by the FDA in the recall of Pai You Guo. Although the drug is a dietary supplement used for weight loss, it contains undeclared chemical ingredients. Therefore, it must be approved by the FDA.
The first ingredient is phenolphthalein. It is a chemical solution that is suspected of causing cancer. Although this chemical is not approved for marketing in the United States, it had previously been used a laxative.
The second ingredient is sibutramine. The appetite suppressant is approved for use in the United States. According to the FDA, it is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias or stroke.The product is sold and distributed over the internet in either boxes of 30 capsules or in 10 g bags.
