The New Albany – Floyd County Public School District has updated it’s website with the following information:
“As of Tuesday, October 2, 2007, the Floyd County Health Department (FCHD) and Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) have 10 confirmed positive E. coli results, and are still waiting for lab results on other suspected cases. The two additional cases were suspected cases that have now been confirmed, so health officials are still confident that all cases are related to the original cluster at Galena Elementary School. Three of these cases do not attend school and no other New Albany-Floyd County Schools have cases of E. coli other than Galena Elementary.”

Indiana State Department of Health Commissioner, Judy Monroe, M.D., announced the following on the state’s website: “The State Department of Health will continue to work in partnership with local health officials in Floyd County until we determine the source of this infection.”
Dr. Monroe also added: “It is important for all Hoosiers to thoroughly wash their hands throughout the day. Effective hand-washing can remove many illness-causing bacteria such as E .coli.”
The State Health Department suggests that, “The most effective way to prevent infection is thorough hand-washing with warm soap and water for at least 20 seconds after using the restroom, before preparing food, and before eating.”
E. coli Symptoms and Complications – Symptoms of E.coli O157:H7 infection include severe abdominal cramps and watery diarrhea. The diarrhea may become bloody and can lead to dehydration. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all. There is usually little or no fever. Symptoms usually resolve in 5-10 days.
Complications of E. coli O157:H7 infection may include Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a serious medical condition that may occur in about 2%-7% of cases.
