October 30, 2007: Kroger Seafood Dips Recalled for Listeria Contamination

Kroger Smoked Salmon Dip, Cajun Salmon Dip, Southern Style Crab Dip and Sun Dried Tomato Crab Dip have been recalled for possible Listeria contamination. On October 22, Georgia inspectors found Listeria in a 7.5 ounce package of Smoked Salmon Dip. That dip was taken off the market, and the other three were included in the recall as a precaution.

The Smoked Salmon, Cajun and Southern Style dips all have a “Use By” date of November 4, while the Sun Dried Tomato dip has a “Use By” date of October 24.

The dips were packaged in Knoxville and sold in eight states in the South. According to a Kroger spokesman, so far there have no reported illnesses linked with the dips.

Listeriosis, the serious illness caused by eating food contaminated by Listeria, can have the following symptoms: fever, muscle aches, and, occasionally, nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur. The disease affects primarily pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and adults with weakened immune systems.
