After 67 years in business, one of the largest hamburger suppliers in the U.S. announced that it was closing. Topps Meat Co., based in Elizabeth, N.J., has been linked with the recall of almost 22 million pounds of frozen beef patties that may be contaminated with E. coli. That number represents a year of production for the company.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has upped the number of cases of E. coli infection linked to the recalled hamburger products to thirty. There have been no deaths reported.
Topps’ hamburger production consisted of grinding beef parts provided by slaughterhouses, forming the ground meat into hamburger patties and then freezing them. The company supplied supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, schools and hospitals with the patties.
