McNeil Consumer Healthcare, the manufacturers of Children’s and Infants’ Tylenol, has issued a voluntary recall of these products due to the possibility of being contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia).
A letter regarding the recall was sent to healthcare professionals on September 18, 2009. A copy of the letter can be found on Tylenol’s website for professionals.
The bacteria were found after McNeil’s testing of a raw material. The raw material is an inactive ingredient used in the recalled products.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), B. cepacia is a bacteria found in water and soil. Symptoms of B. cepacia on people vary widely, ranging from no symptoms at all, to serious respiratory infections, especially in patients with Cystic Fibrosis.
