Illinois Salmonella Outbreak Information

The press release also reported that although Portillo’s may be linked to the 13 cases of salmonellosis, health officials have not yet identified a possible source of contamination. Food samples are being tested for the presence of Salmonella, and restaurant workers are providing stool samples to determine if any of the employees are infected. Portillo’s employees will not be permitted report to work until two consecutive stool samples test negative for Salmonella. The restaurant was also sanitized Monday evening of last week.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food. Seniors, the very young, and individuals who are immunocompromised are at greatest risk for developing Complications of Food Poisoning.
