The FDA announced that Goodness Gardens chives have been recalled due to potential Listeria contamination.
Goodness Gardens Inc., New Hampton NY, distributed the recalled chives to retailers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Alabama, Illinois and Virginia.
Consumers should note that the chives are packaged in clamshell containers, twist tie bunches, and 1-pound bags. The lot number of the recalled chives is 0201111 and is dated May 6, 2011.
Listeria is a type of bacterium that can cause serious illness in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions. In addition, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
