May 30, 2011: At Least 16 Dead and Hundreds Left Ill After E. coli Outbreak

As of May 30, 2011, an E. coli outbreak in Germany has resulted in 14 deaths, and at least 329 cases of severe illness.  Beginning in Germany, the outbreak has spread to other northern European countries.  Health officials believe that the outbreak is likely to worsen in the coming days. In Sweden, 36 cases of E. coli have been reported, while Britain, Denmark, France and the Netherlands have all had reported cases as well.  All of the cases have been linked to travel in Germany.

While officials have identified contaminated cucumbers as the source of the outbreak, they have been unable to determine whether the contamination occurred in Spain or in transit to Germany.
