Incivek, a drug that is commonly used for Hepatitis C patients, is causing serious skin reactions, sometimes resulting in death. This occurs when peginteferon alfa and ribavirin, drugs used in Incivek combination treatment, are consumed along with Incivek. Deaths only ensued when the combination treatment was continued to be taken after there were signs of already worsening skin reactions.
The FDA has announced that the combination treatment must be immediately stopped if patients are suffering from a serious rash, which is the black box warning to the Incivek drug label.
The FDA explains that the drug, Incivek, “is a hepatic C virus NS3/4A protease inhibitor in combinations with peginterferon alfa and ribavirin for the treatment of genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C in adult patients with compensated liver disease, including patients who have cirrhosis, are treatment-naïve, or who have been previously received interferon-based treatment.”
Incivek is a product manufactured by Vertex Pharmaceuticals which is based in Cambridge, MA. To date, there are no details about the amount people who are now facing serious skin conditions or who have died do to the Incivek combination treatment.
