Over 600 Patrons Sickened After Eating at New Theatre Restaurant

After attending shows between January 15 and 19 at Overland Park’s New Theatre Restaurant in Kansas City, over 600 attendees became sickened with intestinal infections. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) began an investigation of the outbreak. Their findings, after testing four of the people sickened, confirmed that the illness was the result of a norovirus.

The Kansas City, KA, establishment is a dinner-theater venue showcasing Broadway musicals and comedies alongside food and drink, and holds both a matinee and evening show. Illnesses were reported from people who attended either showings.

On January 20, 2016, the KDHE inspected the theater’s restaurant and found seven priority violations. These transgressions included “several food items not held at the right temperature and an employee who handled a raw chicken tray with gloved hands and then handled ready-to-eat fried chicken without washing hands or changing gloves,” as reported by The Kansas City Star.

In order to track the source and extent of the New Theatre Restaurant norovirus outbreak, the KDHE created a secure, confidential online survey of all people who attended a performance between January 15 and 19 at the New Theatre Restaurant. The investigation also included those who did not become ill, as a way of eliminating possible sources of infection.

The Kansas City Star interviewed one sickened attendee of the January 17 matinee show, Richard Dziedzic. He said he ate from the buffet “[…] mushroom gravy with garlic mashed potatoes, beef tenders, fried chicken tenders and burnt ends.” His wife did not eat the potatoes and gravy and beef tenders, and did not get sick.
