August 13, 2021: FDA Issues Update on Salmonella Weltevreden Shrimp Outbreak

FDA Update on Salmonella Shrimp Outbreak – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an update on the Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak linked to shrimp products.

On August 13, 2021, Avanti Frozen Foods issued an expanded recall for various shrimp products due to the Salmonella outbreak.

FDA Update Information for Salmonella Shrimp Outbreak

On August 13, 2021, the FDA issued a notice that since July 21, 2021, additional cases related to the Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak have been identified. The FDA, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and state and local partners is continuing a multi-state outbreak investigation linked to frozen cooked shrimp distributed by Avanti Frozen Foods.

Due to the new information, the FDA asked Avanti to expand their initial recall to attempt to prevent further illnesses. To date, there have been 9 confirmed illnesses, 3 hospitalizations, in 4 state across the country: Arizona (2), Michigan (2), Nevada (4), Rhode Island (1).

About Salmonella

Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness.
