FDA Safety Announcement – Spruce-like Enteropathy Linked to Benicar
On July 3, 2013, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that the blood pressure medication olmesartan medoxomil (marketed as Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor, Tribenzor, and generic versions) can cause intestinal problems known as sprue-like enteropathy.
More About Benicar and Spruce-like Enteropathy
According to the FDA, sprue-like enteropathy symptoms can include severe, chronic diarrhea with substantial weight loss. The enteropathy may develop months to years after starting Benicar (olmesartan), and sometimes requires hospitalization.
Put Your Health First – If you are taking Benicar or another olmesartan-containing product, and you have a concern or question regarding your health, talk to your doctor or health care professional. Always talk to you doctor before stopping or changing medications, including Benicar which is prescribed to treat high blood pressure.
Why is Benicar (olmesartan medoxomil) prescribed?
Benicar (olmesartan medoxomil) is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) approved for the treatment of high blood pressure, alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. It is one of eight marketed ARB drugs. According to the FDA, “Sprue-like enteropathy has not been detected with ARB drugs other than olmesartan”. Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor, and Tribenzor are marketed by Daiichi Sankyo, Inc., headquartered in Parsippany, NJ. Forest Laboratories Inc., also headquartered in Parsippany, NJ, entered co-promotional agreements with Daiichi Sankyo regarding the Benicar and Azor products.
