IVC FILTER LAWSUIT HELP

The Weinberg Law Firm is currently assisting individuals who have suffered a serious complication from an Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filter, a pulmonary embolism (PE) prevention device that is implanted into the vein. The IVC filter’s “cage-like” prongs are used to catch blood clots, but may, among other complications, puncture the wall of the vein in which it was placed, or migrate to puncture blood vessels and organs.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured by an IVC filter, and you have a question concerning your legal rights, please submit our easy-to-use “Legal Case Evaluation Form”, or contact us toll free at 1-877-934-6274 for a free legal case evaluation.

IVC Filter Complications

Complications associated with IVC filters include:

  • Cardiac tamponade, a life-threatening condition involving bleeding in and around the heart
  • Internal bleeding
  • Perforation, puncture, and other serious damage to the inferior vena cava wall and/or the heart or lungs
  • Hematoma or nerve injury at the puncture site
  • Constant, severe pain in the heart, chest, or elsewhere in the body
  • Pulmonary embolus (a blockage of an artery in the lungs)
  • Respiratory distress (difficulty breathing)
  • Infection
  • Other serious injury or death

FDA Safety Communication Regarding IVC Filters

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have twice issued Safety Communications warning the public of “adverse events and product problems” associated with IVC filters.

In the first Safety Communication, issued August 2010, the FDA warns that the risk of adverse effects from retrievable IVC filters may increase according to the amount of time the device remains in the body after the risk of PE has subsided.

In the subsequent, May 2014 Safety Communication, the FDA continued to warn consumers of the risks associated with IVC filters, including findings from newly published research*; this research concluded that after 29-54 days after implantation the risks of adverse effect outweighs the benefits of the retrievable IVC filters to the patient. These adverse effects may be deadly.

About IVC Filters

IVC filters are inserted into the inferior vena cava (the main blood vessel that returns blood from the lower half of the body to the heart) to filter and prevent blood clots from reaching the lungs, where the clots can cause a blockage in a lung artery, known as a pulmonary embolism or PE. Since a PE can block blood flow to the lungs, it can be disabling or fatal. IVC filters are placed in patients at risk for PE when anticoagulant therapy cannot be used or are ineffective.
