FDA Reports Thousands of Women Have Experienced Vaginal Mesh Injuries.
According to an FDA report dated July 2011, a search of its safety database identified 2,874 adverse event reports linked to vaginal mesh products for the 3 year period from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2010. Complications included reports of injury, death, and mesh failure, including 1,503 events for women undergoing pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery and 1,371 events for women undergoing stress urinary incontinence (SUI) surgery.
